Cost of traveling in Chiang Mai

🏠 Accommodation

Like other parts of Thailand, Chiang Mai offers cheap hostels starting from around 10 euros and private rooms from about 20 euros per night.

Accommodations in this area are generally well-maintained, but it’s always a good idea to check the latest reviews on your booking platform.

🚍 Transportation

In Chiang Mai, the city center is small and comfortable to explore on foot.

For reaching nearby cities like Chiang Rai or Pai, you can take a public bus or a shared van, which typically costs no more than 10 euros.

Taxis and tuk-tuks are also available but are the most expensive options. Don’t forget to negotiate the price before you take them.

Using taxis via the Grab app is also cost-effective.

For more freedom and to explore farther places, renting a motorbike is practical and usually costs up to 5 euros per day.

🍽️ Food and Dining

I always highly recommend eating at night markets, street food stalls, or local restaurants that aren’t fancy tourist spots. In these places, you can enjoy meals for as little as 2-3 euros.

🏰 Activities

In this area, most temples are free to visit, but the White Temple has an entry fee of 2.5 euros. It is one of the most fascinating temples in Thailand.

You can also book various tours here, with the elephant sanctuary being the most expensive option, costing around 60-100 euros.

The White Temple in Chiang Rai features a striking sculpture of reaching hands, symbolizing desire and suffering
